Production Internships

Join the next generation of theater professionals.

HVSF Production Interns will be offered the opportunity to sharpen their skills through direct collaboration with department heads and staff and will act as the dedicated creative team behind the Conservatory Company mainstage production and subsequent tour.  An indispensable part of this nationally recognized theater, the HVSF Intern Company is the next generation of theater professionals.

Throughout the internship, in a seminar series designed exclusively for interns, staff members from across the company illuminate the workings of a large arts organization and offer guidance to career paths ahead.

PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT

If you love solving problems, thinking quickly on your feet, and working backstage, consider Production Management. At HVSF, you will work side by side with some of the country’s best designers, Equity stage managers, directors, and Equity actors. Learn Broadway and Off-Broadway Production Management skills and technical theater tips and tricks. Be involved in the tech rehearsal and performance process for mainstage productions, with a specific focus on achieving the highest quality, professional production value for 5 large-scale classics in a unique and beautiful environment. Assist with crafting repertory schedules and collecting information about upcoming productions. You will be asked to take charge of the build/design and sourcing of props for the Conservatory Company show (LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST) and will work closely with the Production Manager and the Assistant Production Manager on all of the season’s shows. This internship is perfect for an emerging professional with interest and experience in all technical theater departments. The ideal candidate will have strong written and verbal communication skills, excellent professional ethics, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. A high skill level in Microsoft Word and Excel will increase your chances of selection.

STAGE MANAGEMENT

Are you the person backstage who knows where everything is, knows where each actor has to be, and loves to keep a production running smoothly? We want you. The Stage Management Internship could start as early as mid-April or early May, so it’s helpful if you’re a high school graduate. You’ll be in on the ground floor of repertory rehearsals in NYC, and helping move the production from the wooden floor of the rehearsal studio to the sandy floor of the Theater Tent in the Hudson Valley. You’ll work alongside Equity Stage Managers and learn how to manage an Equity rehearsal and the needs of the actors throughout the season. You’ll be indispensable as the Assistant Stage Manager for the Conservatory Company show (LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST) and the production's subsequent tours. Stage Management Interns will join the Equity Membership Candidacy program during the season. A high skill level in Microsoft Word and Excel will increase your chances of selection.

LIGHTING/ELECTRICS

HVSF hires some of the best lighting designers in the country, and the most sought-after Master Electricians and professional electricians. Learn all the basics of theatrical lighting: installation/hang, focus, programming and running of shows. Support five large-scale productions of classics, including two World Premieres, in a unique and beautiful environment. You will be asked to design lights for the Conservatory Company show (LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST) with as much - or as little - help as you'd like. Work alongside professional stage electricians, board programmers, master electricians, and lighting designers to gain skill and experience in the practice of professional regional theater in a fast-paced environment. The ideal applicant should have a basic understanding of theatrical electrics and electrical safety, and should expect to learn how to work with repertory production and advanced industry equipment. HVSF is an experience unlike any other, and a family that you will love and remember.

SOUND

HVSF gives you the opportunity to work side-by-side with some of the best Sound Designers in the country. Sound Interns are entrusted with a great deal of responsibility and have the opportunity to play an integral role over the course of load-in, tech and running the show. Receive one-on-one mentoring and experience with advanced professional equipment and digital mixing consoles. Support five large-scale productions of classics, including two World Premieres, in a unique and beautiful environment. You will be asked to design sound for the Conservatory Company show (LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST) with as much - or as little - help as you'd like. Applicant should be detail-oriented and personable with the ability to work effectively with many different personalities. QLab and sound mixing experience are a definite plus. HVSF is an experience unlike any other, and a family that you will love and remember.

COMPANY MANAGEMENT

Company Management can be the most integral role to the health and happiness of a theater family. HVSF brings highly trained and professional actors, directors, and designers to the Hudson Valley for an entire summer. The Company Management intern will learn to assist in arranging travel and housing for all guest artists and attending to health and safety issues and the general well-being of guest and resident employees of Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival. The Company Management Intern develops a personal relationship with actors, directors, designers, and production staff by providing support to the Company Manager. The outcome of this Internship is professional knowledge of AEA union rules, contracts, and the services that protect the artists while away from home. The Intern gains excellent organization and interpersonal communication skills as well as proficiency in managing multiple projects and deadlines, planning and preparing events, working with spreadsheets, forms, and budgets. Learn how to be the glue that holds a theater company together, while supporting five large-scale productions in a unique and beautiful environment.

COSTUME

HVSF gives you the opportunity to work alongside some of the best Costume Design and Wardrobe professionals in the country. You will get hands-on experience with the day-to-day running of a repertory company, working alongside the Wardrobe Supervisor and Assistant, becoming an integral part of the team. The ideal candidate should be able to think on their feet, work well with actors and other crew members, and keep up with the fast-paced backstage costume changes and needs for each show. A working knowledge of sewing, construction, repair, and costume maintenance is essential. Skill with hair/wig styling and make-up application is also a plus. You will design costumes for the Conservatory Company show (LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST), working alongside other Production Interns, Conservatory Company actors, and a guest director. You will be mentored by the HVSF resident Costume Designer throughout the process.
