Production Internships

Join the next generation of theater professionals.

HVSF Production Interns will be offered the opportunity to sharpen their skills through direct collaboration with department heads and staff and will act as the dedicated creative team behind the Conservatory Company production and subsequent tour.  An indispensable part of this nationally recognized theater, the HVSF Intern Company is the next generation of theater professionals. Throughout the internship, in a seminar series designed exclusively for interns, staff members from across the company illuminate the workings of a large arts organization and offer guidance to career paths ahead. 

Applications for internships in Production Management, Stage Management, Lighting, Sound, Company Management, and Costume are due no later than January 31, 2018. Shared housing and local transportation are provided for Production Interns. A weekly stipend of $200 is paid, plus tour and tech bumps as determined by the Production Manager. 

 

PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT

If you love solving problems, thinking quickly on your feet, and working backstage, consider Production Management. At HVSF, you will work side by side with some of the country’s best designers, Equity stage managers, directors, and Equity actors. Be involved in the tech rehearsal and performance process for mainstage productions, with a specific focus on achieving the highest quality, professional production value for 5 large-scale classics in a unique and beautiful environment. Assist with the build and run of all shows, and the creation of essential paperwork. This internship is perfect for an emerging professional with interest and experience in all technical theater departments. The ideal candidate will have strong written and verbal communication skills, excellent professional ethics, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. A high skill level in Microsoft Word and Excel and varied experience in technical disciplines will increase your chances of selection. Driver’s license required.

STAGE MANAGEMENT

Are you the person backstage who knows where everything is, knows where each actor has to be, and loves to keep a production running smoothly? We want you. The Stage Management Internship could start as early as mid-April or early May. One intern will be in on the ground floor of repertory rehearsals in NYC, helping move the production from the wooden floor of the rehearsal studio to the sandy floor of the Theater Tent in the Hudson Valley. The second will jump in right before tech and work to make all of the repertory shows work seamlessly under the Tent. Both interns will work alongside Equity Stage Managers and learn how to manage an Equity rehearsal and the needs of the actors throughout the season. You’ll be indispensable as either the Assistant Stage Manager for the Conservatory Company’s devised show THE SEA-MAID’S MUSIC, or for HVSF’s world premiere of RIP VAN WINKLE. Stage Management Interns have the option to join the Equity Membership Candidacy program.

LIGHTING: ELECTRICS & DESIGN

HVSF hires some of the best lighting designers in the country, and the most sought-after Master Electricians and professional electricians. Both of our Lighting Interns will develop skills in: installation/hang, focus, Ion programming and running of shows. Support four large-scale productions of classics, including one World Premiere, in a unique and beautiful outdoor environment. Work alongside professional stage electricians and lighting designers to gain skill and experience in the practice of professional regional theater in a fast-paced environment. The ideal applicant should have a basic understanding of hang, focus, programming, design, and electrical safety, and will learn to work with a unique outdoor plot, repertory schedule, and advanced industry equipment.

SOUND

Work side-by-side with some of the best Sound Designers in the country! Sound Interns are entrusted with a great deal of responsibility and have the opportunity to play an integral role over the course of load-in, tech, and running the show. Receive one-on-one mentoring and experience with advanced professional equipment and digital mixing consoles. Support four large-scale productions of classics, including one World Premiere, in a unique and beautiful outdoor environment. The ideal applicant should be detail-oriented and personable with the ability to work effectively with many different personalities. QLab and sound mixing experience are a definite plus.

COMPANY MANAGEMENT

Company Management can play the most integral role to the health and happiness of a theater family. HVSF brings highly trained and professional actors, directors, and designers to the Hudson Valley for an entire summer. The Company Management intern will learn to assist in arranging travel and housing for all guest artists and attending to health and safety issues and the general well-being of guest and resident employees of Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival. The outcome of this Internship is professional knowledge of AEA union rules, contracts, and the services that protect the artists while away from home, so it is excellent for students and early professionals interested in arts administration or branching out from other theatrical disciplines. The Company Management Intern will gain excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills as well as proficiency in interpreting contracts, managing multiple projects and deadlines, planning and preparing events, and working with spreadsheets, forms, and budgets. Under the supervision of the Company Manager, you will also serve as the company manager for the Conservatory Company’s devised show THE SEA-MAID’S MUSIC. Learn how to be the glue that holds a theater company together, while supporting four large-scale productions in a unique and beautiful environment. Driver’s license and excellent driving record required, but a vehicle is provided.

COSTUME

HVSF gives you the opportunity to work alongside some of the best Costume Design and Wardrobe professionals in the country. You will get hands-on experience with the day-to-day running of a repertory company, working alongside the Wardrobe Supervisor and Assistant, becoming an integral part of the team. The ideal candidate should be able to think on their feet, work well with actors and other crew members, and keep up with the fast-paced backstage costume changes and needs for each show. A working knowledge of sewing, construction, repair, and costume maintenance is essential. Skill with hair/wig styling and make-up application is also a plus. You will be mentored by the HVSF resident Costume Designer throughout the process.
