The Sheila Allen Colby Legacy Giving Society

If HVS has made a difference to you and your family, we hope you will consider remembering the Festival in your estate plan and/or as a beneficiary of a charitable trust, retirement plan, or life insurance policy. Your support will ensure the vitality of Shakespeare within the Hudson Valley for years to come!

With a legacy gift you can:

  • Make a more significant charitable gift than you may have thought possible
  • Reduce your income tax and avoid capital gains taxes
  • Leave a legacy without giving up assets during your lifetime
  • Support a theater you love and help us to create a lasting community

Make us part of your estate plan by:

  • Making a bequest to HVS in your will, see sample language below
  • Designating HVS as a beneficiary of an IRA 401K, annuity, or life insurance contract
  • Naming HVS as a beneficiary or create a charitable trust

Sample Bequest Language:

Hudson Valley Shakespeare (HVS) EIN #: 13-3499385

For an unrestricted gift that allows the Hudson Valley Shakespeare to determine how to use the funds based on the most pressing needs, use the following language for your will and/or trust:

“I give to the Hudson Valley Shakespeare, Inc., a nonprofit organization currently located at 1 Snake Hill Road, Garrison, NY 10524 _________ [written amount or percentage of the estate or description of property] for its unrestricted charitable use and purpose.”

To designate your provision for a particular purpose:

“I give to the Hudson Valley Shakespeare, Inc., a nonprofit corporation currently located at at 1 Snake Hill Road, Garrison, NY 10524 _________ [written amount or percentage of the estate or description of property]. This gift should be used for (state purpose). If HVSF determines that it is not possible (or prudent) to administer my gift as originally intended, then the Hudson Valley Shakespeare, Inc. may, in its sole and uncontrolled discretion, direct the use of my bequest for a purpose related as closely as possible to that stated above.”

Give from your Retirement Account

At any age you can designate the Hudson Valley Shakespeare as the beneficiary of all or a percentage of your Individual Retirement Account, and it will pass to us tax-free after your lifetime. It’s simple, just requiring that you contact your IRA administrator for a change-of-beneficiary form or download a form from your provider’s website. HVSF EIN: 13-3499385

Charitable Gift Annuities

With a charitable gift annuity you agree to make a gift to HVS and we, in return, agree to pay you (and someone else, if you choose) a fixed amount each year for the rest of your life. The balance is used to support our work. This type of donation can provide you with regular payments for life and allow HVSF to further our mission. You can also qualify for a variety of tax benefits depending on how you fund your gift.

If you fund your gift annuity with cash or appreciated property, you qualify for a federal income tax deduction if you itemize. In addition, you can minimize capital gains taxes when you fund your gift with appreciated property. And, you can fund your gift using your IRA assets.

This program is named for the inimitable Sheila Allen Colby. To Sheila, HVSF was where she could enjoy intimate, moving, and magical performances along with the world’s natural beauty in the most dramatic of settings. For this reason, and for all the joy it brought to her and her family, Sheila generously made a legacy gift to the Hudson Valley Shakespeare.
