CULTURAL PLACEMAKING WITH SUSTAINABILITY AT ITS HEART

As stewards of more than 98 acres in the Hudson Valley, Hudson Valley Shakespeare has placed sustainability at the heart of its future. The Samuel H. Scripps Theater Center is on track to become the first purpose-built LEED Platinum theater in the United States, with a public commitment to achieving site-wide carbon neutrality by 2040. Designed with climate-smart strategies—including solar energy, natural ventilation and shading, rainwater reuse, and low–embodied carbon materials—the open-air theater and campus are built to minimize environmental impact while remaining resilient in the face of extreme weather. Sustainability also extends beyond the buildings, shaping production practices and hospitality operations through composting, reduced single-use items, and a circular approach to materials.

The landscape design transforms a former golf course into an ecologically restored, community-accessible environment that prioritizes biodiversity and conservation. Nearly 14 acres of new plantings—including 250 native or adaptive trees, native grasses, perennials, wetlands, and bioretention areas—support pollinators, rehabilitate wildlife habitat, filter stormwater, and increase carbon sequestration in the soil, while significantly reducing the need for irrigation, pesticides, and herbicides. Visitors arrive via accessible paths that wind through native meadows and gardens, offering sweeping views of the Wind Gate and Hudson River as they move toward the hilltop theater, picnic lawns, and gathering spaces. Large portions of the site remain open for future trails and community use, reinforcing the campus as both a cultural and environmental resource.

“Our design celebrates the natural beauty of this extraordinary site and creates connections between theater and landscape to enhance the magic of storytelling for generations to come."

- Thomas Woltz, Senior Principal of NBW.

Through partnerships with local and national conservation organizations, Hudson Valley Shakespeare continues to advance ecological restoration, land stewardship, and climate advocacy across the region. From EV charging stations and ADA-accessible pathways to the adaptive reuse of former golf maintenance buildings as rehearsal spaces and a costume shop, every aspect of the campus reflects a commitment to thoughtful reuse and long-term sustainability. Together, the theater and landscape form a national model for how the performing arts can thrive in balance with the natural world—ensuring that both creative expression and environmental responsibility remain center stage for generations to come.
